A Short Poem

I am an African-American woman.

And I am different.

No, I am not a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

But I understand what it is like to be called out of my name.

Picked on.

Threatened.

Made people uncomfortable cause you are different. Those people don’t understand the real me.

Someone close to my family, who I respect, said to me that I was acting like a white girl.

I’m different.

This person laughed about it. I didn’t find it funny at all.

I am tired of being called out side my race

What does it mean?

I know I participate in some things that most blacks do not do ( such as gardening, backpacking, etc.)

But it doesn’t mean I have not experienced my share of racial stereotypes or microaggressions from others.

Especially those who look just like me.

I’m different.

Thanks for reading the poem. I wanted to say that I am supporter of people. Doesn’t matter your race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. I respect those who are different than myself. As long as you treat me with respect and kindness, you are good in my books.
